Check me Out
I sometimes wonder how the 'bestsellers make it onto the scene. One day there's nothing, and the next the movie is out the day after the book premieres. Surely that many readers don't just fall out of the sky. the reader public flocks to those works like lemmings to the sea. Maybe I should put the words; 'Best Seller', in the title and maybe then I can get readers. I say that because I'm confident that once they start to read Mama Lacee, she'll do the rest. How about you? What's holding you back from checking me out?

Mama Lacee
" I tell every one of them the same thing when they come to see me; The second time you let him hurt you, you tellin' him it's OK. The more you put up with, the more you get. The first thing you do is stand up for yourself."

HOW?
HOW?
Still at the same impasse. The lack of interest is a hurdle that so far seems impossible to clear. The thought that at least folks would give me a try had crossed my mind. I guess it is just human nature to discount what is foreign. I often feel like The Brother From Another Planet when I talk to black folks about my novel. The first response is a question, "did you write this?", followed by, "sure i'll take your card", which they obviously discard as useless. Then they get together with their girlfriends to go see The Help. Were it not for the positive reviews from those that have read my work, I would take the hint and put away my pen. I had a good talk with a friend that advised me to keep the faith. My reply was that I would do my best to hang on to the notion that everybody has to start somewhere. Why not behind the Glass wall.

KYLIE
How do you explain to somebody that you can smell things they can't. People aren't bloodhounds. Explain to them that, if you were there within the last 24 hours, I would know. Less than 6, and I'm on you to your next location. Tell them that, as a child you never had to hunt for Teddy. Every one of them smelled different. Don't bring up that Mommy always smelled funny when Dad would come for a visit. That would open a whole 'nother can of worms.

Bumper Sticker
Bumper stickers, the ultimate impact statement. I don't remember them all but this one stands out;
BORN OK
THE FIRST TIME
BORN OK

The truth..Most of the time it's fairly easy, they lose control of a twitch, pick at an ear. A lot of them need a deep breath to push a lie out. And some of them, you can laugh if you want to, some of them smell funny. Don't ask me to describe it.

Writer's Block Festival
The Writer's Block Festival held here in Louisville Ky.,was great in many ways, it gave me the chance to interact with the people that appreciate what a writer goes through. The open mike session, which every writer should experience, gave me a chance to showcase my craft. It does a writer good to know that the hours you spend in solitude honing your material to the proper edge can pay off in the admiration of your peers. Much more could be said, but I'll put it this way; Write On!

I set this novel in my hometown, Louisville Ky.
A DEATH IN DERBY CITY
Jack Kelso had it all, a successful career as a builder, and a beautiful heiress wife. Actually, it was better than having it all, when a man's beautiful wife has a penchant for additional female company in their marital bed.
The 911 call from his office to the remote building site if his latest project turned off the fantasy, and turned on the nightmare. His secretary's voice telling him his wife was dead still didn't sound real.
Jack Kelso returned home to sort out his life without the woman of his dreams, and fend off the efforts of one Detective Cochran, who seems hell-bent on making Jack the prime suspect.

I worked up an intro piece for another novel in my library.
LASZLO
Linda Ranson figures in a plot conceived by those that stand guard against forces long bent on destruction. Her entire life will spin out of control. She can't explain this mystery man that seemingly fell form the sky and into her arms. He seems to be the only stability in her crumbling world. a world that, at times, looks like the end of days.
What Linda can't see is that she is the power it takes to right the chaos. Laszlo, her mystery man,is an emissary of the strange people Linda sees in her dreams, along with her long passed Grandmother, sent to watch overa world's best hope to stem Armageddon.

The wife said she spoke with my mom, and she was telling her that she went to see The Help, and it was "all that". It's not the first time I've heard rave reviews from Black women, and it leaves me to wonder how to get through to them that I'm offering them a story where the women in the tale are never in need of a savior. It's just another thickness to the glass wall.

I have even been known to write a little poetry;
PASSION
Raw primal urge found and fulfilled
All that should be considered discarded as barriers
The mission being release full and complete
Communication breaking down to guttural moans
Desire steering the course through the rapids
Boldness long suppressed becomes the beacon in the distance
Charting the course out into the open sea
Every reason to refrain is blocked out by the searing light of discovery
Ideals real and imagined rise and fall with the swells
The spray of knowing covering all with its mist.

Kylie
As a writer there are always characters moving around in my head. This particular one has spoken the loudest lately so I'm committing her to print.

Kylie
Kylie was weighing what few options she had. She knew from the start of this chase, the oversized goon sniffing her out had dropped his piece. Nothing else clatters to the ground like a big old pistol. He kept pace as best he could, till she had darted inot this warehouse, so it's not likely he went back to get it. Not that it increased her odds. He was going into his taunting mode. "I know you're in here. Just a matter of time before we meet up and I end this." Kylie could hear him stop moving after he spoke, hoping to get a fix on her position. Kylie had dropped to a crawl as she moved, spread her weight out to make less noise. This is not going to end good if you don't think of something girl. There was an office cubicle and Kylie quick-crawled in that direction. Mr. Goon was now getting closer. "Why don't you just come out and save us both a lot of trouble. I'll make it quick." He stopped again.
Kylie got into position just inside the office cubicle door. From her crawl, she rolled onto her back. She figured to lure him in, and maybe get a chance to catch him at the ankle and hobble the oversized problem until she could finish making her getaway. He was way too close now, and his tone went from menacing to Grim Reaper. "Okay honey, know this, when I find you I'm gonna squeeze the life out of you." Kylie fumbled out her lighter and pitched it to the back corner of the room. Before the sound died away monster man was through the doorway, and into the room. Just as Kylie drew her foot back he caught sight of her movement and spun to face her. Kylie didn't hesitate and drove the heel of her foot into his groin with enough force to bring him up on his toes. the blow was enough that he went down without breaking his fall and his head made a solid thunk on the floor.
Kylie's thoughts that this was over faded quickly when his eyes popped open and fixed on her. She swiveled around just enough to deliver another blow with the heel of her foot directly to his face. After that he was still enough that Kylie figured she better be anyplace but here. As she stepped over him to clear the room she said. "You know, I really hate to do the groin thing to you guys, but sometimes a girl's got no choice ."

Can't get out of neutral
If I had a reader for everyone that's said to me; "Sure, I'll check it out.", I could be further down the path because I'm convinced that once they get around to reading, Mama Lacee will take care of the rest. I say that because everyone that's read me so far has given me a positive review. Still I keep passing out cards and working my one-man advertising campaign.

Mama Lacce @ Amazon.com
So here goes. I'm telling all Bloggers about Mama Lacee. She's the main character in my novel that's set in the twenties. She's a little black lady in her 80's, that has been the local healer since anyone can remember. The locals say she's got special powers, but Mama Lacee says the power is in all of us. Check her out at Amazon.com
glass wall
as an unpublished writer i find it almost impossible to convince readers that i have something to offer. the general attitude is one of platitudes that come in the form of; "yes i'd like to read your novel", but for some reason they never get around to doing so. most often the reasoning is that they've been busy. or in other cases you get the flat stare that says you couldn't have possibly written something i would find worthy of reading. either way, it's like standing behind a glass wall where they can see you, but they can't hear you. i have made it to amazon with my novel so at least i'm one step forward.
